Interview Outfit and Accessories

So, you’ve managed to land that big interview you’ve been working so hard for. Don’t think that the hard work is over just yet. A well known fact is that people judge people when they first meet (consciously or not!).
The key is to know the job role you are going for, what other people wear in that role and to be the best version of yourself that you can present.
Interview Outfit and Accessories
Present yourself visually as someone that is the best fit for the role. Who do they want to see? A smartly dressed woman, yes. But don’t forget your personality – you need them to remember you and to stay feeling like yourself (you on a really great day!).
The outfit I put together above is a look that I personally would use for a variety of different roles and companies. You could equally work the same look in a skirt or trouser suit with a pop of colour in your shoes and bag.
Previously when going for a fashion role I would wear clothes that fit with the look of the brand. For example if I was going for an interview with a company like L K Bennett I would wear a smart, work wear dress with some nice court shoes. But if I was going for a job at Topshop I would wear a look that was bang on trend but with an added bit of quirky.
This concept works if you look at various different banks, lawyer firms and accountant firms. They are projecting an image to their customers about the companies brand/personality.
For example; Does the accountancy firm you are interviewing with, appeal to young up and coming businesses? Your look should stay smart but not unapproachable and stuffy. I have found that thinking in this way for my own interviews in office or fashion roles helps to focus what I choose to wear and makes you stand out from the crowd.
Don’t forget to only wear items  that are polished and well looked after. That trusty bag that has been stuffed to the brim and stuck in the tube door may not be the best choice!
I have also included some things to remember for the day. Some obvious ideas, but in the heat of panic it is all too easy to forget to put your phone on silent or equally, turn vibrate off.
To those of you going for an interview, good luck and if you’d like to add anything please do!

No time to stop yet!

Things have gone a bit crazy here in the studio. Hopefully Friday I will find some time to do a massive clear up.

No sooner had I got back from the Pop Up Piccadilly shop, it was full on with this Thursdays evening event! The silk jersey fabric arrived back from the brilliant Insley & Nash print and dye studio, dyed in a fabulous fresh crunchy apple green shade. Quickly made myself a dress out of the silk jersey to wear tomorrow evening!

If you’ve ever organised an event, it takes a lot of hard work and persistence! Anyway, it is just around the corner now and everything has been falling into place. One last push and we will be ready.

If anybody is still interested in coming tomorrow evening to the Colourful Evening in Bloomsbury London there are a couple of tickets still available. You will need to get in there soon as the ticket sales close at 4pm.

Pictures will be taken and I will do a blog post after I’ve had a rest!!

London City Hair and Beauty Directory

All professional women find time is short – whether you are trying to squeeze in meetings and seeing your partner or networking and pick up your kids from school – it can be tricky!

So to help you with your juggling act, I decided to start a new and (hopefully) useful directory online. Aimed at women in the city of London, specifically in the Square Mile area:

Instead of just a general title like women’s wear or beauty we have tried to aid you in the search for the service or product you require.

Visit our hair and beauty page and you will find a range of hair and beauty service providers with a table showing the various services they provide.

Whether you’re looking for a wash and blow dry, a full head of colour, a facial or a manicure; you should find a local service provider in our City of London directory!

I would love some feedback regarding how useful you have found it – if you work in London City. I’ll look to be doing some reviews of service and products at some point so let me know what you’d like to know about!!

Perhaps you’ve already had a great experience at one of the locations we have listed and would like to give us a little review. Feel free to get in touch.

If women find it useful I will do directories in other areas!

Women’s London Networking Evening in Colour!

You may or may not know that I run a clothing company. So the big company announcement today is that I have launched the tickets for our September event!

colour-eve-graphic-fb

The evening is for women from a whole range of industries and professions to come together in London and enjoy an evening of networking and personal consultations.

The theme of the evening is colour which is such a broad and interesting topic. The colours you wear effect the way that people perceive you, it can affect your mood and it can make you look amazing or drab.

Around that them of colour we have selected different areas for the evening:

  • Makeup: Focusing on eyeshadow colour
  • Hosiery Finding the best natural colour match for your skin
  • Hair: what is the best hair colour for you
  • Image: What is one colour that looks amazing on you
  • Clothes: Allowing you to select exactly the colour you want for your dress

The brands included in the event are:

Makeup WORKS: A British makeup brand who have been making inroads on the makeup market. They are targeted at mature skin; the colours and shades are great and in particular the products are matte. Makeup WORKS will be providing 10 minute slots to discuss eyeshade colours and if you want, they can try it out on you.

FALKE: A premium hosiery brand. Leading the way in hosiery they have a new exciting range called Perfect Skin Colours. A consultant will be at our event with samples in hand to guide you through choosing the right skin colour for your legs.

FOUR: Leading hair colourists voted ‘Best for Colour’ by the Tatler hair guide 2013 will be providing 10 minute consultations. If you’re unsure about your hair colour or you need some advice then this is for you.

Inside Out Image: What colour would be best for you to wear to work? What colours suit your skin tone? Joanna Gaudoin from Inside Out Image will be starting the evening off by introducing us to the world of colour and then will be providing one to one mini consultations.

and then there is my company: Kerry O’Brine Womens Wear: We design and produce clothing in my UK studio. The silk Line is our main collection and this provides women the chance to choose exactly what they want: choose your style from our six dresses, choose your colour and choose your sleeve length.

I’ll be launching our new colour dye to order service some new colours for Autumn Winter and some other things too! For now, that’s all I will say about this because you’ll have to come to the launch to find out more!!

The Academy: The venue is equally exciting as the line-up! We have the whole of the ground floor in The Academy in Bloomsbury, London for the evening of 12th September. If it’s a lovely sunny evening you’ll be able to network outside in the courtyard or have a drink in the conservatory! The 4* hotel has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Enjoy the evening with complimentary drinks available on arrival and canapes included in the ticket price. I always insist on food…. who can network after work on an empty stomach? Not me!!

All the women involved are supportive and friendly individuals. We love to network and support other women running their own business, working their way up the career ladder and getting the balance between a high flying career and home life.

If you are based in and around London and you are interested and a woman then please join us.

COLOUR-EVENING

Feed back is always welcomed. Do you know of a great location to hold another event? What brand would you like to get advice from? Is there a topic that you would like to learn more about at an event?

In Navy? Wear Pearls

Red bus LondonPhew yesterday I had such a busy day. Lots of nipping around London to get things done. At the same time we took the opportunity to take some pics of a bit of dress styling and the dress in motion!Going on the underground

Close up pearls and Fortnums

I’m wearing the Jane dress styled with some extra large pearls.

Outside Fortnum and MasonsThe extra large pearls create a sophisticated statement feature to the outfit but you could wear any size pearls. The white/offwhite goes well with navy so you could try a beaded necklace in ivory or an ivory silk scarf for a similar effect.

Behind A Hairy Situation

Whilst making the women’s Silk Line fashion photoshoot I took some footage of behind the scenes. I have finally found the time to put it together! This first one is on the hair. Suzie Love describes how she will put together the look for the day. If you have seen the fashion photoshoot here you will see a variety of different hair looks. Using my 1920s inspiration combined with the modern professional woman’s day to evening lifestyle Suzie changed and adapted the hairstyle through out the shoot.

It’s nice to see a professional fashion hair stylist in action and I have picked up some tips for how to use the comb and spray when putting in the rollers which I may use myself!

The next little video is of the makeup!

Day to Night Vintage Inspired Hair Styling

The styles created here are easily achieved and can be transformed from a day to night look with the ease of taking out a couple of pins.

day and night

This look works best on medium to long hair but if your hair is shorter something similar can still work  you just won’t get such a dramatic change for evening.

Taking out the rollersFirstly the hair needs to be set in heated rollers running down the hair from the parting.  A side parting works best, especially if you want that Veronica Lake look.

Hair will change form when warm so make sure you let your rollers heat up properly.  Then in turn the hair sets when cold so let them cool down before taking them out.

Taking out the rollers

This is the important  bit. When you’ve taken out the rollers (carefully) you need to brush out the hair.

The rollers just taken out

The rollers just taken out

Take small sections of hair and gently brush down from root to ends.  You will notice as the curls brush out an ‘s’ shape begins to form, you need to encourage this shape as you brush.  When you’re happy with the shape spray all over with a strong hairspray (try Elnett).

Shaping the hair

behind-the-scenes-9

For day loosely pull the hair back and fix it in a bun shape at the nape of the neck with a few pins, then spray.  This will also keep the waves in place until the evening when all you need to do is remove the pins and let the hair fall into place.  You may want to gently comb through the waves at this point just keep encouraging that all important ‘s’ shape.

Now all you need to do is add a nice red lip (like NARs or Dior in lipcolour Blazing) and you’re ready to go.
