A special Christmas Trip With Family or Friends

It’s nice to do things with friends and family at this time of year. You may not have time for any big event or get away i.e. like me your diary is soooooo full up till Christmas. If you can squeeze an extra special trip around Christmas time it’s well worth the effort. We are coming closer and closer to Christmas now but sometimes the last minute plans are the best! Personally, I think I’m going to arrange stuff for the days after Christmas.

London

Make a day of it in London. I love having a wander around London and looking at all the Christmas lights and decorations. Go to some of the big stores to see their festive window displays. Head to Winter Wonderland at Hyde Park – free entry. Open from 10am to 10pm (from 21st November 2014 – 4th January 2014).

Then grab some skates for ice skating at Somerset House (11th December 2014 – 11th January 2015) or just sit in the Fortnum’s Lodge with a large glass of bubbly and feel smug that your not falling over on an icy sheet!

After some serious window shopping stay in the west end for a mulled wine at a pub, (try Pontefracte Castle on Wigmore street)  for a warming end to the day.

Paris
I always fancy heading to a Christmasy market abroad. But how about doing something different and heading to Paris for a Christmas outing?

Chrismas Tree, Galleries Lafayette, Paris

Head to Paris to see the amazing Christmas Tree at the Galeries Lafayette.

Go ice skating at the Grand Palais des Glaces, see the lights at the Champs-Elysees and the Christmas tree at Galeries Lafayette (with of course a bit of shopping!).

NYC

For a long weekend away, you can’t beat New York New York, especially at Christmas time. I love the hussle and bussle on the streets in NYC and they really know how to make it feel Christmasy. Go shopping and meet Santa on the 8th floor at Macys Santaland. The Mommy Poppins gives a great breakdown of the what’s, where’s, when and who’s of Santaland  (buy tickets in advance).

See the Christmas tree and go ice skating and then do a bit more shopping at the Rockefeller Centre!

Wrapping up Christmas – Some Creative Ideas to Try

Here are some nice ideas on Pinterest you could do if you want to wrap your Christmas presents with a little creativity!

Follow my Christmas board on Pinterest for more ideas. To make your wrapping that bit different think about how you can change the key components: ribbon, paper, decorations and labels.
Ribbon – You could go a different route and use some fabric fancy ribbons, strips of paper, knitting yarn, lace, felt strips, string or tinsel.string parcel gift wrapping ideas christmas

Add some interesting ribbons

Paper – Select something other that is not normally used for wrapping such as music paper, white or brown paper, magazines or even fabric!

Try using something different as wrapping paper. How about some Christmas carol music manuscript paper

Labels – Instead of just opting for labels from the shops that match the paper why don’t you make something a bit different. Stick on buttons, cut up old Christmas cards, make some from clay or use blackboard paint. The label world is as wide as your label imagination!

Here is a robin cut from an old christmas card and re-used as a gift tag

Decoration and extras – Instead of the normal bows why don’t you attach some bells, sweets, buttons, pine cones, a paper snowflake or a pom pom!
Candy, sweet wrapping

Tie some candy into your ribbon!

Getting in the spirit of Christmas – what to wear to work!

I’m always looking around to see what is in the shops. All in the name of market research of course! So I thought it’s high time I started sharing this research with everyone else.
As everyone else is getting into Christmas mode I thought I’d better join in!!
(I recently met a man who’d done all his Christmas shopping!!! I mean, what is the world coming to!?)
What do you wear to work when you want to feel a little cheerful and festive without being too obvious with a Christmas jumper stuffed on under your blazer!?
I think red dresses are one answer. Pick a well fitting red dress in an appropriate length and good neck line and you can make a striking smart entrance to the office.
5 Red Designer Dresses for work
In the above picture I have selected 5 red designer brand dresses by Armani Collezioni, Landress, Anglomania, Diane Von Furstenberg and Joseph that I think are very work appropriate.
Below you can see my suggested complimentary colour and styling ideas. I have selected a couple of lovely non-Christmasy scarves. Choosing a scarf with a other colours in it is a great way of introducing a second or third colour into an outfit.

These pieces are all available online as I write this so you can get shopping right away!!

Putting away the sparkle

So, the time to put away the sparkle has come round again. We’ve just packed away the decorations and I’ve popped my sparkly clothes towards the back of the wardrobe in clothing bags. I love the glitz and the sparkle around Christmas time but to start 2014 off it feels refreshing to get some clean cut minimalist clothing styles out again.

I think it might also be worthwhile getting a bit more minimalist with my ‘stuff’! De-cluttering is my on-going battle but I feel on the cusp of achieving it. It’s not my New Years resolution but something I am going to continue to dedicate time for.

I love a well designed piece of storage and this piece from A place for Everything is no exception – different trays for all the Christmas baubles (yes please!!)

Christmas Decoration Storage Box
and this box for storing everything you need to wrap presents is what I really really want!!!

Do you have any thing you want to achieve going forward? Do you manage to live in a minimalist way?

Christmas Gift Ideas – From the Boss to the PA!

When working in retail in the City of London I would often get men and women coming in trying to find a gift for their female PA or office assistant. It’s tricky because you want to get something that will mean something (not just a box of chocolates or voucher) but nothing too personal that breaks away from the working relationship you have.

With Christmas coming up my mind began drifting back to this conundrum again! Depending on how well you know the person, I have put together a few ideas to help you pick something!Christmas Gift Ideas

If you know she loves food or drink – a nice hamper from Fortnum Masons could go down a storm. You can get them at various price points and choices of themes i.e. wine lover, champagne and chocolates etc…
Her tipple of choice in the office might be tea. A lovely bone china teacup and saucer to use at home could be perfect. If she loves a glass of bubbles then select a gorgeous pair of champagne saucers.
Perhaps your PA listens to music on the way into the office or can’t be parted from her phone. A smart phone case or a high quality pair of earphones could be just right.
If you want to keep it a work focused gift – select something of great quality and made in leather. For instance I found this nice red leather document holder from DKNY – stylish and practical!! A leather business card holder or a folding leather jotter might be right for the list writer or networker!
Her love of lipsticks might be a well known office fact. Get her something beautiful to keep her beauty products in. A little lipstick case will keep her prized lippy safe (I picked a red leather one from Aspinal of London £45). Choose a small makeup bag in a colour you know she wears – Aspinal gives you a choice of colours for this small leather bag £75.
Staying stylish and warm on the way to and from work is a great theme for a present! Keep it gorgeous with cashmere. The green scarf (£79) and gloves (£35) I chose is from Bora – they have a wide range of colours to choose from! The red leather gloves I picked are from Dents and they have a lovely cashmere lining. My final suggestion is a Mulberry scarf; a popular well known brand and a classic piece.
Finally, if you want to give something that is personalised to your PA – choose something like correspondence cards or a leather social diary to have her name put on. It is a thoughtful gift but still office appropriate!
Other ideas I’ve thought about are lovely high end candles such as Diptyque or Jo Malone. A lovely selection of shower and body creams could be nice to help her unwind. The problem with these ideas is that you need to know what kind of smells she likes or if she has sensitive skin or not!
What have you received as a Christmas gift from your boss and did you think it was appropriate?
