Wearing Coloured Tights To Work – professional work wear ideas

Can you wear coloured opaque tights to work?

Well, probably not if your work place is very corporate and has strict guide lines.

I’ve selected some of the easiest black alternatives to get you started, if you want to and can, branch away from black opaque tights in your work place/office!

Navy

Navy is a good place to start if you are looking to branch out from black opaque tights. Navy is still very neutral, smart/professional and corporate. I like the way Jean at Extra-petite.com styles navy in unexpected ways.

In picture 1. Jean pulls navy through all of the accessories – tights, bag and shoes.

In this picture Jean adds colour (and personality) to her outfit with the bold green coat. Once taken off you have a pretty neutral corporate outfit – a good idea to steal?

In this other outfit navy cover’s a large proportion of the body; the torso and legs.

Because of this, threading the maroon through the outfit in shoes, gloves and skirt works well to balance it out.

 Grey

Dark grey tights

Another easy step into colour and away from black is grey.

A dark grey skirt/dress and dark grey tights is an easily achievable, flattering and professional look.

Red Tights

Red comes in many shades. Maroon and burgundy which are darker shades of red are the easiest to en-corporate into a work wear look. Demonstrated here, are three ways to approach adding strong coloured tights to outfits and if your feeling super adventurous then you could exchange the red for another bright colour!

1. Wear an all black outfit with your coloured tights. The contrast is bold but not too crazy!

2. Here the maroon colour has been selected from the dress and matched with maroon tights. Matching your tights colour to a colour in a pattern is an easy way to style an outfit so it is coherent. It is not always easy to find the exact match in colour

3. Grey is a softer neutral than black and can be a nice complimentary colour to red tights.

Wearing black opaque tights to work

Wearing tights in the winter to work. Tights are a great tool to have in the cupboard for Autumn Winter. There are different ways to style opaque tights and look professional and smart for work. Here I am looking at how to style black opaques for the Autumn winter in the office.

Bold coloured dress or suit and black opaques

An easy styling trick: Use one bright colour in your outfit and contrast this with some bold black opaques.
See how in each picture the person has linked the black tights back through the outfit.1. a black belt2. a black bag3. a black polo neck sweater/jumper underneath. This is a good trick to pull an outfit together.

Lace back distraction

Lace back distraction

Fallen in love with a lace back dress but not sure what bra to wear underneath it?

  • With a lace back then your best bet could be to go strapless. Straps could add visual confusion behind the lace pattern.
  • Always choose a nude/skin tone. Even if the bra can be seen through the lace it will be not as obvious as a black or other coloured bra.
  • A smooth seamless cup can increase the illusion that you are not wearing a bra (no bumps and lumps) but with all the benefits and support from wearing a bra!
  • Last but not least you could try a strapless bra (like the picture above) with a clear back. This clear plastic back will mean that your bra will disappear to the naked eye and your skin will show through.

Morning tea – Grey and black

It’s a little early in the morning for pictures. You can see how thrilled I looked! Morning cup of tea to get the grey cells going and my studio assistant has already got the camera out!! But here I am dressed in my black Missy dress, accessorised with a grey lace jacket. The jacket looks good flying loose but I have added a grey belt to nip in at the waist. The volume of the jacket works well over the fitted dress.

I’ve also pic 2added one key accessory – the grey/silver bracelet.

Black and grey are a great work combination. Have a go at mixing your work wardrobe up – you might have a grey suit jacket that would look great over a black dress?

Take your pick of black jackets

Following on from my last blog entry. I’m looking at some good black jacket choices around.

If you have a pear shape body type like me, then you’ll want a jacket that doesn’t cut off at your widest point: hip area and also perhaps a shoulder or neck detail that will balance out your hips. This little black jacket I’m wearing has got a little gathering in the shoulders, nips in at my waist and is shorter than my hips.

kasinua cropped linen jacket by By Malene Birger

This little jacket is a great little cropped shape.

If you are a colomn shape – long, slim and angular; go for a double breasted jacket so you widen out your body and also one that nips in at the waist.

Jil Sander Double-breasted silk-blend twill blazer

If you are a colomn shape – wide and straight; you need a jacket that nips in at the waist. Go for a single breasted jacket to ensure you don’t widen your figure. If you can find a jacket that has a fake or real waistband at the waistline then this will help with creating a waistline when your jacket is done up.

Stella McCartney Iris wool-twill blazer
When shoulders are the widest point of your body then you’ll need to create width further down to balance them out. You can do this with the peplum jackets that have been around at the moment. For example:

In Navy? Wear Pearls

Close up pearls and Fortnums

I’m wearing the Jane dress styled with some extra large pearls.

Outside Fortnum and MasonsThe extra large pearls create a sophisticated statement feature to the outfit but you could wear any size pearls. The white/offwhite goes well with navy so you could try a beaded necklace in ivory or an ivory silk scarf for a similar effect.
