An updated list of inspirational fashion, textiles and clothing exhibitions for 2014 (Bath, London, NYC and Paris).
I’ve also added in some art exhibits that sound good. The fashion exhibits listed are a mix of fashion photography as well as fashion garments. Lots of things happening in 2014 – it’s going to be a busy year!
Artist Textiles: Picasso to Warhol (31st Jan – 17th May 2014) The Fashion and Textiles Museum in London traces the history of 20th Century art in textiles. Looks like it is going to be a particularly colourful and interesting exhibit.
The Sunflowers (25th Jan- 27th April) The National Gallery: See all three of Van Goughs Sunflower paintings together and delve deeper into the paintings with results of scientific research on display as well. (I was excited to find out about this!)
The Georgians (25th Jan 2014 – 1st Jan 2015) The propriety of dress in the Georgian period on show at the Bath Museum of Costume.
17th Century Gloves – Whilst your in Bath Museum of Costume – pop in and see the exhibition of rare 17th Century gloves.
Isabella Blow: Fashion Galore (20th Nov 2013 – 2nd March 2014) Somerset House hosts an exhibition celebrating Isabella’s life and wardrobe
Club to Catwalk London Fashion in the 1980s (still on till 16th Feb 2014)
Fashion Rules Exhibition (till July 4th 2015) – Royal gowns on display at Kensington Palace
The Novel of a Wardrobe – on in Paris until March 16th 2014
“Trend-ology” (Until April 30th 2014) The Museum at FIT (NYC) exhibits a range of fashion pieces offering some insight into where trends originate from.
Bailey’s Stardust (Feb 6th-1st June) National Portrait Gallery – All fashion images picked and printed by David Bailey.
Elegance in the age of Crisis: Fashions of the 1930s (Feb 7th – April 19th 2014) The Museum at FIT (NYC) continues to produce interesting exhibits and I’m looking forward to this one. As always the exhibits are free which is really great in a city filled with pay to enter museums.
A Century of Fashion Photography at Conde Nast (March 1st – May 25th 2014) – The Palais Galliera Museum of Fashion: A photography exhibition with 15 couture items from the Palais Galliera collections
The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk (9th April 2014 – 17th Aug 2014) – Yay!!
The Glamour of Italian Fashion 1945-2014 (5th April – 27th July 2014) – At the V & A: The craftsmanship and luxurious materials should make this a lovely exhibit.
The Great War in Costume (17thJuly- end August) The Bath Museum of Costume will show a special exhibition with pieces from Downton Abbey as a centre piece! Exciting news for all those Downton fans out there.
Henri Matisse The Cut-Outs (17th April – 7th September 2014) – Tate Modern exhibits the great Matisse cut-out works – I love the bold shapes and colours and this will be the first exhibit at Tate Modern I’ve seen in a long while. Nothing they’ve been doing has grabbed my attention in a while. Maybe I will book for the quieter restricted viewing on the Sunday late evenings 20:00-22:30.
Wedding Dress 1755-2014 (3rd May 2014 – 15th March 2015) – If you are interested in bridal wear and the way key designers have treated this subject.
Colour (18th June-7th September 2014) – National Gallery: Each room of this exhibition will be dedicated to a different colour. Trace the history of colour in art.
Charles James: Beyond Fashion – MET Museum (8th May – 10th Aug 2014) – The Costume Institute in NYC will explore the designs of the Anglo-American designer Charles James.
Horst: Photographer of Style (6th Sept 2014 – 4th Jan 2015) – A retrospective of Horst’s work (photography)
Rembrandt The Final Years (15th Oct 2014 – 18th Jan 2015) – Bringing together 100 works from museums across the world – showing is creative work in the final years of his life.
